Meta Open Arts Statement
Uma Rani Iyli merges everyday objects with ancient practices in her work, resulting in a dialogue between culture and time. This work in Meta's Fremont office depicts an unfolded sari that references a loom with spools that stand in for hands. Uma's installation combines two separate series, one of vibrant paintings inspired by traditional saris and another that incorporates silk-wrapped plexi tubes made of remnant thread from the weaver communities of India of which she was once a part of.
Artist Statement
“Silk Brocades Installation 1” pays homage to my Indian roots and heritage. Commissioned by Facebook Open Arts, this 32-foot multidimensional installation strives to express the celebratory origins and vibrant colors of the traditional Sari suspended, not yet cut free from its loom. Through my meditative work process, I have been able to weave a Sari in my own visual language. The spools and leftover silk threads used in this installation are gathered from Sari looms directly from the weaver and re-purposed in my San Francisco studio. The painted lines on and off the panels as well as the fiber wrapped Plexiglas tubes references the looms, the intricate linework and handiwork. The design specifically references the sectional patterns that are traditionally created on a Sari, highlighting the elaborate end known as a “pallu”. Generally, brocaded silk Saris are worn during festivals, weddings, and celebratory occasions. It is my desire for this installation to bring about a similar uplifting and contemplative experience for a global audience.
